Dustin Nelson takes second overall for the day

Round 9 2005 ITP QuadCross

Nov. 01, 2005 By Brittany Bloodworth
Round nine of the ITP QuadCross was held this past weekend at Glen Helen Race Way, after about a month off from racing. The race was on the REM track, which we hadn’t been on since April. The track had changed a lot, and now included a woop section. Not to mention that the track was now running backwards.

There where twelve pros that were signed up to race for the weekend, including a visit from Kory Ellis, who we had not scene around here for awhile, because he was running the GNC Series. Another face that we had not scene in awhile in the pro class was Nic Grunland. He made the drive out from Las Vegas to ride today. Glen Helen was having some problems with the gate, so they had to run qualifier for the pros because they could not fit them all on the track.

Pro Qualifier 1 - Kory Ellis, number 53 riding for ALBA Action, grabbed the hole shot for the first qualifier. Dustin Nelson, Danny Ragon, Mike Machado, Darrel Patton, and Jason Weller. Three corners later Darrel Patton spun out, dropping him to the back of the pack. Half way through the first lap Kory Ellis and Dustin Nelson had already put about a five second lead on third place, Danny Ragon., number 5 As Kory Ellis and Dustin Nelson headed into the back section they were so close that they were rubbing tires. We were all wondering who would come out of the back section ahead. When they came out Ellis was still out front, but Nelson was putting the pressure on Ellis. The other battle here was for the third place position with Danny Ragon and Mike Machado battling side by side before going into the back section. Darrel Patton was running in the fifth place position. Dustin Nelson wanted the win and was not going to give up easy on Ellis as the headed into the back section once again tire to tire. Before the step up Dustin Nelson missed a gear giving Kory Ellis a little bit of a break. As the checkered flag come out Kory Ellis takes the win with about a twelve second lead of the second place position of Dustin Nelson. Mike Machado, number 61, took the third place position, Danny Ragon grabbed fourth, and Darrel Patton rounded out the top five for the qualifier.

Pro Qualifier 2 - Jeremy Schell, number 14 riding for Golden West Cycles, grabbed the holeshot for the second qualifier. Dana Creech, Doug Eichner, Tony Munio, and Scott Santellan followed right behind. Coming out of the back section Dana Creech had made his way around Jeremy Schell to take over the first place position. Dough Eichner was running in the third place, and Tony Munio was in fourth. Dana Creech had about a three second lead over Jeremy Schell, and Schell had a three second lead over Eichner. Coming out of the back section Dana Creech put some more distance, about five seconds, between himself and Jeremy Schell. Doug Eichner, number 11, was bringing the heat to Schell and was waiting for the right moment to make the pass. Tony Munio, number 66, was running in the fourth place position. Eichner got what he needed as Jeremy Schell over shot the berm, allowing Eichner to move into the second place position. Jeremy Schell was able to get back on the track, but had a front tire that was flat. Schell ended up pulling off the track and taking a DNF. Dana Creech took the win for the second qualifier and Doug Eichner took second.

Pro Main - Dana Creech grabbed the holeshot for the main, followed by Dustin Nelson, Kory Ellis, Mike Machado, Doug Eichner, Tony Munio, Jeremy Schell, Darrel Patton, Danny Ragon, Nic Granlund, Jason Weller, and Scott Santellan. Coming out of the back section on the first lap Dana Creech was still in the lead with Dustin Nelson and Kory Ellis right behind him. The only change was that Jeremy Schell and moved his way into the sixth position. Three laps into the race Dana Creech was still leading the race, with Dustin Nelson, and Kory Ellis right behind. Mike Machado was running in the fourth place position, and Jeremy Schell had moved into the fifth place position. Doug Eichner was running in the sixth place position, and Nic Granlund was running in the seventh place position, until he got high centered on a berm dropping to the back of the pack. Dana Creech had a comfortable lead over Dustin Nelson. As Doug Eichner and Mike Machado were battling for the sixth place position when they both over shot the berm, but they were quick to get back onto the track. As the white flag came out Dana Creech still lead the race, followed by Dustin Nelson in second and Kory Ellis in third. Jeremy Schell still running in the fourth place position, but Doug Eichner was not very far behind Schell. Mike Machado was running in the fifth place position. Checked Flag comes out and Dana Creech takes the win and the overall for the day. Dustin Nelson, number 94 took the second place position, and Kory Ellis took the third place position for the day. Doug Eichner took fourth overall for the weekend, and Mike Machado rounded out the top five for the weekend.

With Dana Creech taking the overall for the weekend and Jeremy Schell, who is the points leader in the series, finishing fourth, Creech closed the gap six points between himself and Schell. Jeremy Schell still leads the series with 177 points and Dana Creech moved into the second place with 167 points. Dustin Nelson is in third place with 165 points. With there only being one round left, and it being a double points round, anything is still able to happen. Depending on who finishes in the second place position it could be any of these three riders taking the 2005 ITP QuadCross Championship.

4 - Stroke C - With eight riders signed up to race the 4-Stroke C class it was going to be an interesting race. Keith Tebeau, number 7, was out front right off the start with James Thomas and Travis Williams right behind. About half way through the first moto Travis Williams took a tumble after the finish line, and unfortunately was not able to finish the race. Because of his tumble Brittany Bloodworth moved in the third place position. On the next lap Keith Tebeau stalled it going on the hill and was not able to get it started. Moving James Thomas into the first place position, Bloodworth into second, and Ryan Cahill into the third place for the first moto.

Second moto it was Keith Tebeau out front again off the start, but about half way through the first lap him and James Thomas got tangled and Ryan Cahill moved into the first place position. Brittany Bloodworth moved into the second place position. It was not long before Keith was back around Bloodworth and Cahill to take over the first place position again. Unfortunately a lap later he stalled it going up the hill again and Ryan Cahill was back around him, but only for about half a lap and Keith Tebeau was back around and in the first place position. Keith took the win for the second moto, but it was Ryan Cahill who took the win for the overall today. Brittany Bloodworth took an overall second for the day.

We were glad to see everyone out here for round nine of the ITP Quad Cross, and congratulations to everyone. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Final Round December 4th back on the national track. Don’t forget that the final round is double points, so come out and race, and watch the battle for the pro class.

See everyone in December.
