After almost two months off, the second round of the 2006 ITP Quad Cross series was back in action. This was the first round out of six, that will not be held at Glen Helen National Race Way. The race was back at Race Town 395, in Adelanto, California. Many of the racers where excited to be back here, because of the fact that this is one of the best tracks for those of us who like to get some air. Unfortunately, there where a few crashes throughout the day, but we are glad to know that they are all doing ok now.
The turn-out was great, with around 150 riders, there was going to be some great battles going on. And although there was some problems with getting the races in order, and everything going, everyone was excited to be able to race, after such a long break in the series.
As I was talking to the 3X champion, Jeremy Schell, I was unfortunate to hear that the next day, he would be making the move to Missouri. Schell, who is an outstanding riding, father, and husband, will now be competing back east. As unfortunate as I was to hear that he would be leaving us, I was excited, because I know that he will be doing great back east in the GNC’s and a few other races, and you can bet that he will definitely be up there with the top riders. So we want to wish him luck and we all hope to hear from him very soon, as he is still planning on making it to the ITP QuadCross series.
The first moto of the pro class was spilt and would be used for gate positioning for the main. And with 18 riders, we where all wondering who would be able to make the podium? Would Schell go out with a bang, after just coming back from some broken bones? Or would Dustin Nelson take home the first place position. We all knew for a fact it WOULD NOT be Dana Creech, due to the fact that, well basically, he WAS NOT RACING even though he was there for this round. He had planned on racing his Rhino, but was not able to finish working on it before the race started.
The main was here, and the gate dropped, well sort of. Only part of the gate dropped allowing only 5 riders the take off. The other riders, a few seconds later, plowed the gate and they where all off, with Doug Eichner grabbing the holeshot. There was a huge controversy, because they would not red flag the race. Which upset several people, along with the riders. Four laps into the race, they red flagged it, which upset the leaders even more. Then came the fact that, well they had done half the laps and according to the rules, the positions should stand where when they finished at. After a very long discussion, they decided to re-run the race. Although there where many riders that where very upset, this was the only fair way to do things. So they headed back to the starting gate.
The gate was down, and all of the riders where off this time. It was Dustin Nelson, number 94 who is riding for SRF, who grabbed the holeshot, but the other riders where right behind him. Including Jeremy Schell on his Golden West Cycle YFZ 450, who, in the first second moto, spun out right off the start. Looks like he was going to have a better race this time. It was Nelson who was leading the race, followed closely by Jeremy Schell. And Doug Eichner, number 11, who had pulled the holeshot in the first second moto, moved into the third place position. Mike Machado, and Cyle Chislock where running in the fourth and fifth place positions. But it was Dustin Nelson who was able to take the win for the second second moto, and take home the over all for the day. With Jeremy Schell taking the second place position, and Eichner grabbing third.
But with all of the controversy that happened we are not sure if they are going to keep the scores for this race or if they will be thrown out. We will just have to wait and see what they are going to do.
2 & 4 Stroke Intermediate - Dennis Capogni, number 8, grabbed the holeshot an lead the entire race. With his ability to make every single jump, he just put distance in between himself and the other riders. Dennis is definitely someone to talk about, he is one of the fastest riders at the track, and is always consistent. Bubba Hustead grabbed the second place position, and Keith Taylor, number 85, grabbed third. Second moto, and the gate dropped, and there was a new face out front. Keith Taylor grabbed the holeshot on his BIGKIDRACING YFZ 450. Keith was able to stay out front for the first lap and a half, but due to some “complications” of not be able to make a jump Capogni jumped right past him to take over the first place position. Capogni held strong, and was able to take home the overall win with a 1-1 finish. Taylor took home the second place with a 3-2 finish, Bubba Hustead, number 05, took third place, and Shawn Anderson, number 40, grabbed the fourth place position, and Ed Franco rounded out the five.
All in all the weekend when great, besides the fact of a few crashes, but we hope that all of the riders are ok, and come back strong. We look forward to seeing everyone at the third round of the ITP Quad Cross, at Arizona Cycle Park, in two weeks, April 2nd.
