The sixth round of the ITP Quad Cross was back at Glen Helen, and since it’s the middle of summer we where all expecting it to be hot, so we packed our shorts and tank tops and headed down there. Sunday morning when we woke up, to our surprise it was raining. It had been raining since about four in the morning, and we where all dreading what the track would be like. The weather has been hot in the area lately so this was just a build up of moisture, and most people said it should clear up pretty soon, but soon was not soon enough.

The track was muddy, most riders would only do one of two laps, and then stop, because they could not see out of their goggles anymore. And in almost every corner there was a yellow flag, and a group of people trying to dig some one out of the mud. Today’s racing was not going to be about going fast, but about riding smart, and not getting stuck.

Pro moto one - It was Dustin Nelson, number 94, who would take the early lead for the pro class with Tj Dietrich, number 55, running in the second place position. Jeff Spooner, number 56, was running in the third spot, and Doug Eichner, who is use to racing in the weather conditions was running in the fourth spot. But like we said this race, was not about going fast, but about choosing the right lines, and Nelson quickly learned. Nelson got stuck in one of the corners, and lost three position, putting Tj Dietrich out front. Dietrich is an ITP regular who makes the long haul from Montana every round. And it was good to see someone so dedicated to this sport up front, and we where all cheering him on. Another rider who needed some support from us was Mike Machado, who was out there racing with a broken collar bone. Machado broke his collar bone during the last WORCS race in Washougal Washington. At first the doctor had told him that he had just pulled some muscles, but after some more x-rays he found out the he had actually broken it. So Machado was just out there riding for points, in hope of still finishing this series with a good over all. Jeff Spooner was now running in the second place position, with high hopes of taking home this win this weekend, but there was not enough time for him to real in Dietrich. Tj Dietrich took home the win for the first moto, followed by Jeff Spooner in the second place, and Doug Eichner rounding out the podium. Nelson was still able to hold onto the fourth place position, and rookie Chris Riley, number 04, rounded out the top five. Many of the riders did not get to finish due to quad issues, which once again shows up that anything can happen no matter what level you are riding at.

Pro Moto two - Jeff Spooner was quick off the line, and the first one to the corner. Around the Talladega there was some dust, and once it cleared up, it was Dustin Nelson left running to his quad. It seemed the Nelson had taken a tumble, but was quick to get back on his feet, but was even quicker to notice that he had broken the spindle where the tie rod mount on, and realized he was out for the this race. It was Jeff Spooner in the first place position, with John Shafe running in the second spot, and Doug Eichner running in third. Eichner was bringing the pressure, and was able to make the pass on John Shafe in the back section to take over the second place position. Tj Dietrich was having another great moto running in the top of the pack, and had a great chance for a podium position. But unfortunately his chain came off near the end of the race, but he was able to get it back on but dropped down quite a few positions. Jeff Spooner grabbed the win for the second moto, with

Doug Eichner grabbing the second place position and John Shafe rounding out the top three for the weekend. Congratulations to Jeff Spooner for his first win in the pro class at an ITP Quad Cross event.

Even with Dustin Nelson’s mishap with this weekend race, he is still in the lead for the series with 123 points. Doug Eichner is in the second position with 108 points, and Jeff Spooner moved his way into the third spot with 107 points. We are now half way through this series, so anything can still happen .

4-Stroke Beginner - Christy McGuffin grabbed the hole shot for the first moto, but due to the fact that her wrist is in a cast she has a problem turning, so she was not able to hold onto the lead, but still finished out great for the weekend, and is in hopes of having her cast off by the next race. Dylan Belto grabbed the overall win for the weekend with a 1-2 finish. Doxey Eaton grabbed the second place position with a 4-3 finish, and Kevin Miller rounded out the top three with a 3-5 finish for the weekend. Keely Woosley ran a great second moto, taking the win, but due to a crash in the first moto, she was unable to take home a podium position.

2 & 4 Stroke Intermediate - Dennis Capgoni grabbed his second win for the year with a 2-1 finish this weekend. Landon Hurst took home the second place position and Dean Pierce rounded out the top three. Pierce is still leading the series, but only by three points now. Copogni is now running in the second position and Bubba Hustead rounds out the top three.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next round of the ITP Quad Cross in two weeks. The August 13th race will be held once again at Glen Helen, and with the Dirt Bike Nationals coming up quickly, you can expect even more changes to this track.
