Round six of the ITP Quad Cross was held Sunday,
July 31st , at Glen Helen Raceway. There was a great turn-out for
this race, and everyone was excited to be back at Glen Helen
Raceway, which was a lot different from the previous round held at
Race Town 395. Glen Helen is a little bit more mellow than
Racetown. With no big jumps at Glen Helen, it is mainly about
motoring around the track. However there are quite a few corners
and some technical S sections.
We were under a flash flood warning all weekend
but we were fortunate enough to not see any rain all weekend. The
down-side was that instead, it was very hot all weekend with high
90 degree weather. With nine races scheduled to go, we all wanted
to get started as early as possible so we could be done
quicker.
With 19 pros signed up to race, the field would
not be split for qualifying rounds. It was going to be a great
battle. To top it off, Dana Creech went in leading the series and
the two-time champion Jeremy Schell was trying to get back to the
number one position. Dustin Nelson, currently in third place for
points, was hoping for a win for this weekend to help him out.
Pro Moto 1
Dustin Nelson # 94 was leading the pack coming
around the Talledaga turn the first time. But in the next corner
Jeremy Schell #14 cut it sharp and got right next to Nelson.
Nelson and Schell bumped coming out of the corner, causing
Nelson to fall back a few positions. Doug Eichner then moved
into the second place position. Dana Creech #52 was running in the
fifth spot.
It was not very long before Nelson moved up back
into second. Schell had a little bit of distance on Nelson, and
went on to win the first moto, with Nelson taking second and Creech
third.
Pro Moto 2
Dustin Nelson grabbed the hole-shot for the
second moto. This time he came through clean and was out front with
clean air in front of him. This was a big deal because a water line
at the track broke before the Pro race and they had to shut down
the water system. It got very dry and dusty real fast. Nelson said
later that he did not mind the broken pipe line because he was out
front.
Jeremy Schell was gaining ever-so-slightly but
the dry, dusty conditions made it hard to see and breathe on some
parts of the track. Dana Creech once again moved up into third and
that's where he would finish.
Nelson led the entire race from start to finish,
taking the win for the second moto and the overall for the day with
a 2-1 finish. Schell took second overall with a 1-2 finish, and
Creech took the last podium position with a 3-3 finish for the
day.
Dana Creech is still leading the series, but
Schell has now gained a couple points on him. Creech now leads the
series by two points with 90 points total. Schell is in second with
88 points, and Nelson is running in third place with 77 points.
91-250 2-Stroke Beginner
Steven Estroda #11 took the overall win with a
2-1 finish for the day. Brandon Walker #914, took second overall,
after a bad start in the first moto when his quad wouldn't start.
Walker took a fourth in the first moto and a second in the second
moto giving his an overall for the day of second. Tyler Patton, son
of Darrel Patton who races the Pro class, took third overall for
the day with a 3-3 finish.
91-450 Intermediate
Keith Taylor grabbed the holeshot for both
motos, on a pink Yamaha YFZ 450 ( borrowed from his sister after
having some motor problems on his own bike the day before) and the
overall for the day with a 2 -1 finish. Sean Hustead took second
overall for the day with a 1 -2 finish. David Argo #13, who was
racing with a fractured wrist, had some bad luck of his own. He
crashed in the second moto and dislocated his knee. This crash is
what caused the broken waterline, which completely flooded one of
the straight aways. We all wish Argo a quick recovery, as he said
he will still be at the next round.
91- 450 4-Stroke Beginner
Steven Osgood took the overall for the day with
a 2-1 finish. Keith Tebeau took second overall for the day with a
1-2 finish after battling his way up on the second moto after a
mid-pack start. James Thomas took third for the day with a
consistent 3-3 finish.
Women's Novice
Christy McGuffin took the overall for the day
with a 1-1 finish and extended her overall lead in points. Robyn
Tavares # 13 took second overall for the day with a 2 -2 finish.
Robyn hasn't been racing very much lately as her dad has been
focusing on the WORCS series. But it was great seeing her out
there, since we haven't seen her here since the last round of the
ITP QuadCross in 2005.
We want to thank ITP who is the Title sponsor
for this series and who donated the Yamaha YFZ 450 to be given away
at the end of the year.
Thanks to all of the other sponsors who help
make this series possible. Without you we wouldn't have such an
awesome series here in Southern California.
We look forward to seeing everybody back at Glen
Helen National Raceway August 14th (the date has
not been changed) for round seven of the ITP QuadCross.
