Day 1 Coverage: 2005 International Powersports Dealer Expo

Dealer Expo, 2005

Feb. 01, 2005 By Dean Waters
Day 1 - just the tip of the iceberg. Several products turned our heads - some had us shaking our heads. We learned a little more about shock technology, marveled at how far helmets have come, practiced our Korean pronounciation. Here's a sample (and yeah, we have the first 40 members of the Girls of Indy 2005 Gallery, ready to meet you March 1.)

Elka Suspension has a new "Track System" TM shock - Twin Rate Adjustable Knob System. The Track System add a second chamber in parallel with the standard compression circuit. This allows the shock to absorb the peak force when casing a jump or in braking bumps. Currently in testing by a number of Elka's Pro riders - expect it to be available to YOU next Fall. Colored ATV tires by CycleTires.com. In the sport tires you can have red, yellow, blue or green, front or rear. You utility riders can have camo for slugging through the mud.

We saw a new line of A-arms by JJHR. They are the first ever (patent pending) formed A-arms for ATVs. The design allows the arm to have much more flex, and still return to it's original shape. Welds also contain silicon, for additional flexiblity at a traditionally weak point of many arms. JJR also showed several models of swingarms, as above. The DynaGrip PowerBall Pro, coming at you from DynaFlex International. After several decades in use for carpal tunnel rehabilitation, aggressive riders are now finding this weird little dyno-ball's ability to strengthen grip, condition to avoid arm pump, and increase range of motion. Just try to start and keep this baby going! We'll be testing it out, and let you know if we find a difference by race day.

The Bell Moto 8 was sporting a new fully-adjustable flying bridge visor with air intake vents. The nose piece also has a new downward angle for maximum inflow by capturing the air at the most natural angle a rider carries their head. All in only 1,350 grams of Kevlar/carbon fiber/fiberglass. The Moto 8 is the "suckiest helmet ever."Yeah, we can say that, because they do! They claim the new liner is made from the same material that those memory-mattresses are made of. Cooler, more form fitting, better ventilation. Get your checkbook - $399 retail.

RIS Designs, as usual, had lots of trick billet aluminum pieces for ATVs. We checked out one-piece shift and brake levers for TRX450R and Yamaha YFZ 450. High Lifter Products Outlaw MST tire - a great all-around tire that is designed for riders that want traction everywhere, but want a heavy bite if they do get into the deep stuff - mud or snow.

Tomorrow - more products, more photos, more Girls of Indy... Full Expo coverage will also include a feature on what's new in the Dirtbike Scene and an in-depth look at the Mini ATV racing scene.
