2nd Annual Sand Sports Super Show! Orange County Fairgrounds, Costa Mesa CA
If you're a dune rat, the Super Show was the place to see
the trickest in sand toys!
Making its second appearance at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, CA. The 2nd Annual Sand Sports Super Show was an even bigger orgy of chrome, polished aluminum and brute horsepower than last year's event. Double the size in fact! 153 vendors from all over the country brought their wares to be ogled and inspected by over 12,000 show visitors.
Compared to last years more than respectable turnout of 70 vendors and 6500 visitors, this years show was not only an incredible success, it shows the dramatic increase of participants in our sport in recent years. There is a lot going on in the sand sports industry. The explosion of technologically advanced high end sand cars and new high performance ATVs like Yamaha's new 660R Raptor, is just a part of it. The force driving the marketplace is the literally tens of thousands of families that have discovered the fun of sand duning.
The Super Show was packed full of stuff to wet your appetite for the dunes, dozens of exotic sand cars were on display, from one seater mini rails to giant five seater cars, some with over 1,000 horsepower! Parts, accessories, clothing, trailers, RV's, you name it. Everything you could possibly need for an action packed weekend of duning was available. Since the price of admission got you unlimited re-entry there were several thousand re-admissions to the show. And they probably came back to buy!
There is a also huge positive shift within our sport that is accompanying this growth. People are not only enjoying the sport, but becoming politically active in preserving it. With efforts like Project Sand's Glamis Dune Clean Up and The American Sand Association's organized legal fight against the pending Federal lawsuit that will permanently close over 10.2 million acres in the CDCA (much of this land is located within the Glamis Sand Dunes). The ASA signed up over 5,000 new members at the show! The manufacturers and vendors are also banding together, contributing huge sums of money to the fight.
The producers of the Sands Sports Super Show also hosted a meeting on Sunday morning with the ASA, CORVA, BLM, SDORC and the vendors to further organize efforts in fighting land closures and create an atmosphere of solidarity within our industry to work proactively with the BLM in dealing with issues in the dunes like trash and hooliganism.
If you missed this year's show, you missed a lot! But there is a reprieve, lucky for you we were there to shoot photos so that we could give you a taste of what you missed. We've got over 100 photos of trick toys from the show for you to smoke your modem on! And if you were there, maybe you got lucky and we caught you on the camera for posterity. Unless of course you lied to your wife and told her you were going to your sick old Auntie's to fix here some chicken soup, and really came to the show to buy a $40,000 sand rail!
