2006 ITP Quad Cross Round 8

Record breaking number of entries at Surprise, Arizona

Oct. 06, 2006 By Brittany Bloodworth
For the eighth round of the ITP Quad Cross, we headed to Surprise, Arizona to compete at Speed World Race Way. This is the  favorite track on the circuit for most riders and we are really glad that we get to race here. In knowing that this is an amazing track, not to mention the fact that most of the riders love racing at night, it was no surprise when it was announced that this was the largest turn-out that the ITP Quad Cross had ever scene. With 244 riders signed up to race, we knew that it was going to be an eventful night.

Their were many of the regulars signed up to race the pro class, along with some racers who we had not scene in a while. Take Sage Baker. Sage left us last year to go and compete in the National Circuit, where he did very well. Kory Ellis was also there to try his luck in the pro class at this round. Kory had  hopes of taking home some cash.

Pro Moto 1

The first moto was not off to a great start with a tangle up in the first corner, and it looked as if it was Darrel Patton and Spooner, but I couldn’t quite tell. It was Dustin Nelson who was the first one to get out of the corner. Dustin  had about a three second lead right off the bat. It was Doug Eichner who was in the second place spot, and Jeff Spooner running in third.  Kory Ellis was just out of the top three running in the fourth place position after having a poor start. Not long after Ellis made the pass on Spooner over the step-up and set his sight on making the pass on Eichner. Spooner was pushed back to the fourth spot and Cyle Chislock was running in fifth. Ellis set his sight on Eichner but the white flag was out and it didn't look like their would be enough time for him to make the pass. In the end it was Dustin Nelson who was able to grab the win for the first moto, with Doug Eichner in the second place position, and Kory Ellis rounding out the top three.

Pro Moto 2

Things were looking better for Alba’s rider Kory Ellis, as he grabbed the hole shot. Ellis was in the lead, but Nelson closed in fast, and was bringing the heat, while TJ Dietrich was running in the third place position. Chris Riley was out there, but he was just riding around for points, as he broke his collar bone a few weeks ago practicing at Race Town 395. But don’t worry, this up-and-comer will be back out there with the best of them in no time. Ellis was running a great moto with about a three second lead over Dustin Nelson. Dietrich was still running in a comfortable third place position. Jeff Spooner was able to work his way from the back of the pack into the fourth place position. Ellis was in the lead but had a little mishap going into one of the corners and Dustin Nelson was able to get around him. Nelson went on to take the second moto win with Kory Ellis finishing in second and TJ Dietrich rounding out the top three.

Dustin Nelson took home the overall for the weekend with a 1-1 finish, while Kory Ellis grabbed second with a 3-2 finish. The third podium position went to Cyle Chislock who finished the weekend with a 5-7 finish.

Amateur Motos

Evan Spooner took the win for the 2 & 4 Stroke Novice class with a 1-1 finish. Evan, being  Jeff Spooner’s little brother,  has an advantage over most of the riders, but definitely shows us that he is an amazing and talented rider himself. Travis Grim grabbed the second place position, with 4-2 finish, and Jevan O’neil grabbed third with a 3-4 finish.

Dean Pierce grabbed the win for the 2 & 4 Stroke Expert class with a 1-1 finish. Bubba Hustead who had some bike problems at the last round with his quad not starting when the gate dropped grabbed a second place position with a 2-2 finish. Justin Noss rounded out the top three with a 3-3 finish. Just shy of the podium was Angela “Moore” Butler who decided to race against the boys at this round. Angela took back her title this year for the GNC Women’s Champion, and we can certainly see how she did it when she grabbed  a fourth place spot in the guys class.

Andy Clark took the win for the 91-450 4 Stroke Beginner class, with a 1-1 finish for the day. This puts him one point away from taking away the third place position in the series from Christy McGuffin. Dylan Belto grabbed the second place position , and Justin Hayward rounded out the top three for the class. Dylan Belto currently sits in the first place position for points, with Keely Woosley in second and Christy McGuffin in third.

It was Kory Ellis on his Yamaha that grabbed the win for the Open Pro class with a 1-1 finish. John Shafe took the second place position, and Darrel Patton rounded out the top three for the night.

We want to thank everyone who attended this round, and took part in the LARGEST event that the Quad Cross series has ever scene. We know this sport is only going to get bigger. We are glad to see that we have such dedicated riders. We also want to thank the sponsors for their support in making this sport this big and an EXTRA BIG thanks to the title Sponsors YAMAHA, and ITP TIRES.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next round of the ITP QUAD CROSS which has been moved from Gorman to Glen Helen. We will be racing on the REM track due to the Fires that the Gorman area are dealing with right now. So we will see everyone at the 9th Round of the ITP Quad Cross at Glen Helen on October 8th.
