Surprise, Arizona, is where we headed for the sixth round of the ITP Quad Cross. This is the second time that this series has visited the track, and with another race scheduled, it wont be the last time. The track was set up pretty much the same as last year, with some minor changes in the track. All of the riders where excited to get out on the track. They opened the track for practice at about five o’clock, and the weather was in the triple digits. But after the sun went down, the temperature dropped to just around 100 degrees.

There where 19 pros signed up to race, with top names like Kory Ellis who is usually back east doing nationals, but had this weekend off, so he decided to make the rip out to an ITP race. Also Dustin Nelson was out there to hopefully extend his lead in the pro class.

Pro Moto one - Jeff Spooner, number 56, grabbed the hole shot for the first moto. Dustin Nelson was running in the second place, and Doug Eichner was running in the third spot coming out of the first corner. Jeff Spooner, has really picked it up this season, and continues to get faster every race. Dustin Nelson had to work his way around Spooner, and it definitely was not easy for him to make the pass. Dustin Nelson was able to make the pass putting Jeff Spooner into the second place position. Doug Eichner was running in the third spot, with Mike Machado holding onto the fourth spot. Nick Hengtgen crashed off the start the start, and had to be air lifted out. He was ok, but his head was busted open, and he they did not want to take any chances. He ended up getting 29 stitches in his face, we are sorry to see this happen to such a talented rider, but we all know that he will be back out there soon. Kory Ellis also had a bad start and was having to work his way up through the
pack. Dustin Nelson took the win for the pro class, followed by Jeff Spooner who grabbed the second place position. Kory Ellis worked his way into the third place position, but did not have enough time to catch the leaders. Doug Eichner finished in the fourth place position, and Mike Machado rounded out the top five for the first moto of the pro class.

Pro Moto two - Dustin Nelson grabbed the holeshot for the second moto. With Cyle Chislock running in the second position, and Jeff Spooner was running in the third place position. Ellis grabbed fourth, and was in hopes of taking the win. Doug Eichner was running in the fifth spot. As Chislock landed off of one of the jumps he spun sideway, Jeff Spooner barley missed him, but Kory Ellis plowed right into, causing Kory to almost go over the bars. But both riders where ok, and quick to get going before anyone got around them. Kory was able to make him move around Spooner, and was set on making the move around Chislock. Eichner was still running in the fifth spot. Kory Ellis soon made the pass around Chislock but was running out of time to try to catch up to Nelson. Dustin Nelson went on to take the win with a 1 - 1 finish. Kory Ellis grabbed the second place position with a 3 -2, and Jeff Spooner grabbed third with a 2 - 4 finish.

265-450 Expert - It was Keith Taylor who was leading the class, but as he was setting up for the second corner another rider T-Boned into him knocking off the track, and into a ditch. It was a few laps before Taylor was able to get of the ditch. It was Dean Pierce who took the win for the first moto, with Jason Farley who grabbed the second place position, and Justin Stocks rounded out the top three. Second moto it was Dean Pierce grabbing the holeshot, Bubba Hustead was in the second place position, and Dennis Capogni was running in the third spot. Taylor looked as if he may have a good moto this time, but as he went to make a pass the other rider shut him out, causing Taylor to take a tumble. Taylor was ok, and finished the race, with a possible broken hand. Dean Pierce took the win for the second moto, and took home the first place overall for the weekend with a 1 -1 finish. Jason Farley took home second overall with a 2- 5 finish, and Justin Noss rounded out the top t
hree with a 4 - 4 finish.

Women’s Intermediate - We where all in for a great surprise when we saw that Angela Butler, was out there to race. You can bet that the girls where excited to be running with this national champion, and where just hoping the she would not lap them. Angela grabbed the holeshot for both motos, and took home the win with a 1 -1 finish for the weekend. Corry Weller grabbed the second place position with a 2-2 finish, and Lynn Prosseor rounded out the top three with a 3 -3 finish.

4 Stroke Novice - Joe Carbajal grabbed the holeshot for the first moto but fell off pace and dropped back to the fourth palace position. The battles in this class where unbelievable, considering there was not much room on the track to pass. It was critical to get a good start, or you would spend the entire race just trying to get around the pack. Gordon Lanik Jr, grabbed the win for both motos, and took home the overall for the weekend. Ryan Cahill grabbed the second overall for the weekend. Brittany Bloodworth, one of the riders who could not seem to get a good start which could be because of the fact that she was on Sean Husted‘s 450, after her bike broke in practice the day before, rounded out the last podium position for the weekend, and definitely deserved it after some of the passes that she had to make around the boys.

We looked forward to seeing everyone at the next round of the ITP Quad Cross back at Glen Helen July 30th.
