PRO-AM PRODUCTION

Mark Kendall (21) leads teammate Josh Upperman (20) and the Pro-Am Production class.

Although Team MotoSport Honda’s Josh Upperman of Louisville, Ohio already clinched the Production championship at Unadilla, he opted to get a little more track time by entering the class on Saturday. With ease he earned both moto wins in route to the overall at the famed Dirt Days of Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. Clay Holmes of Lexington, Ky., earned the win in his qualifier and followed that up with taking second behind Upperman. Member of Tim Farr’s MotoSport Honda team, Mark Kendall of Alliance, Ohio rounded out the podium in third. Back from injury and coming on strong, Texan Cody Miller has been missed on the circuit since round two. Miller showed few signs of having been missing earning third in his qualifier and finishing fourth in the main and overall. Sage Baker of Shasta Lake, Calif., rounded out the top five overall.

WOMENS PRODUCTION

Women’s ATV racing just would be the same if there wasn’t a rivalry which produces some of the best racing during any ATVA National Motocross weekend. Heather Byrd and Angela Butler having been competing against each other for nearly a decade; both winning championships over the years.

Reigning Champion, Heather Byrd of Union City, Tenn., has held the No. 1 plate for the past two years. Although the points tally won’t show it until after the final round, both riders are aware of tie breaking procedures and throw out rounds that are generally used to determine the champion and this year would be no different.

Angela Butler celebrates as she crosses the finish line knowing she just clinched the title for the Women’s class

“Coming into it (round 13) I knew I needed to get the job done this weekend.” Began Butler. “It came down to if Heather wanted to win the championship she’d have to win this weekend and Ballance’s (round 14) and if I wanted to win the championship I would have to win one or the other. Friday I didn’t practice because of all the rain, I just kind of worked on my bike all day long. Saturday, I had a pretty good start. I had the wrong tire choice and was expecting the track to be a lot worse than what it was. I battled with her for a little bit, but I let her go knowing I didn’t have to win on Saturday and then coming up to the white flag I came through and I didn’t know where Heather was and her she ended up breaking down.”

That unfortunate mechanical failure gave her the last position to cross the line after pushing her machine to the checkered flag.

“I felt really bad for her,” continued Butler. “I’d rather battle for the championship a lot more than that, but that’s how the game goes. Coming into Sunday, I knew all I needed was to get first or second today and I’d have it wrapped up, so I battled with her a little bit, came back and got second and just rode to the finish.”

Butler made Dirt Days her sixth win in a row and eight win of the year. Byrd took second ahead of newcomer Megan Manshack of Cleveland, Tex.
