Let it be said with enough technology and desire
to win quad racers can really move.
The
epitome of that was demonstrated by #18 Bobby Taylor on his custom
DS650 space shuttle and #69 Jeff Hancock with his Honda TRX310
rocket. Both were way out in front at the Rocky Point event front
right away, pushing it to the max.
Jeff's
day would end early after replacing an entire top end and not
making the checkpoint before the cars and trucks caught him, he was
then forced to become a spectator.
Taylor,
on the other hand, wouldn't even let blood flowing from his nose
(from all the pounding) slow him down. He would run away with the
Pro ATV, overall ATV, and both Taylor and the DS650 would end up a
quart low.
#5 Max Hernandez came away with
second place and third overall on his custom built Honda TRX650R.
#70 Ruben Wilson aboard his Yamaha YFZ450 was the only other ATV
Pro finisher, taking the third place trophy back to Tucson.
One last race on the factory Honda TRX450R for
this reporter. I'll miss racing old red but where one door closes a
window opens. (So how about it Suzuki, Arctic Cat, Kawasaki - do
you need a test rider?)
Never the less, the
#45 Honda ran flawlessly from start to finish. With the exception
of a stop to check on fallen racer #63 Sr Pro Greg Conroy and being
run off the track while trying to pass a couple of Pro ATV racers -
everything went as planned. With a comfortable pace, I bought the
TRX450R across the finish line with another Pro Stock win and fifth
overall.
Conroy did eventually pick himself
up after the fall and even managed to bring his Yamaha 660 Raptor
in for the class win. #7 Dan Fann raced his way to respectable
second place finish among the veteran class. It wasn't clear what
quad Dan was running this time but odds are it was a Honda.
Rounding out the top three was #55 Kevin Thompson on a Honda
TRX450R.
Customarily I touch base on the
non-pro races. However, with so much controversy over the
checkpoint cut-off and several racers hopping off the track and
riding the highway, I'll just throw general congratulations to all
the racers who took on the Mexican desert and did it with
integrity.
Awesome job racers! Next on the
Whiplash calendar is the Cinder Mountain 100 in Flagstaff Arizona
on June 13th.
