Allied Racing Wheels-New Renegade Wheel!
Celebrating 10 years of excellence, Allied Racing Wheels makes a wide variety of custom wheels for trucks and SUVs, hot rods, rock crawlers, race cars, UTVs, and off-road vehicles. After a recent wheel malfunction on Project long travel SCU, we were in the market for a better-built wheel that could withstand harsh off-road conditions. Allied's American-made two-piece design was the answer for us.

We contacted Greg Mulkey at Allied Racing Wheels. Greg has been designing wheels for over 25 years and started Allied's racing wheel program seven years ago. We needed a strong rear wheel 10 inches wide with a 3.5 inch back space to allow us to fit the car in the trailer without changing the rear tires.

Greg told us that his one-piece outer wheel shell combined with their brand new Renegade style center section is super strong and could withstand anything we could throw at it in the dunes or desert. The outer shell is spun aluminum and heat treated to a T-6 rating. Other manufactures, including our previously failed wheels, use a two-piece rim shell. The one-piece is definitely stronger which put our minds at ease.

1-piece rim shell
The outer rim shell features a rolled inner edge as well as a large back bell section. The rolled edge is designed into the wheel to add strength and keep costs down. It adds 10-1 crush strength and prevents you from spending another $100 per rim by adding an inner reinforcing ring. Most rims have a dip or a smaller back bell section in the rim shell to allow for easier tire instillation. Allied's off-road wheels feature a larger, tighter tire fitting tolerance rear bell section. It is slightly more difficult to install the tire on the rim. However, in the event that the inner bead comes loose there is a much smaller chance of losing tire pressure because the rim shell is a tight fit to the tires bead. Both the rolled edge and large rear bell of the rim adds a huge safety factor while saving money as well.

Baja Crippler by Allied Racing Wheels.
Allied offers three center sections: the Sand Star, the Baja Crippler, and the brand new Renegade. Each center section is forged and then machined to the style the customer requests. During manufacturing the rim shell is swelled with heat. Then the center section is laid in and pulse mig welded into place to ensure a super strong wheel and a tight fit.

Unique Beadlock Design
Allied's beadlock design is one of the best in the wheel industry. Allied offers a steel, aluminum, and soon a plastic beadlock ring. The first unique feature you notice is the use of 32 grade 8 bolts with captive washers to hold the ring to the wheel rather than the standard 18 or 24 bolts. With 32 bolts the ring provides a more even clamping force of the tire bead.

32 bolts!!

This is a stronger, safer design and is less prone to air leaks commonly seen in beadlock wheels. The bolts with the captive washers sit flat on the locking ring. This prevents any chance of a bending force on the bolts which may cause them to fail under a heavy load. The beadlock ring has an outer rolled edge which reduces flex in the ring as well as provides a surface that will not cut the bead in the event the tire is pinched between the ring and a rock. Finally the locking ring is accurately formed to sit perfectly in the tire bead. This insures a centered tire during installation as well as preventing the tire from moving while under a heavy load.

With all the technical jargon explained in detail, it may seem a bit overwhelming and more than you ever wanted to know about wheels. The main bit of information you need to remember is the American made Allied Racing wheel is no ordinary wheel. A lot of thought and engineering went into the design of these wheels to offer a super strong, affordable wheel. With prices in the $400-$500 range, they can be ordered in any width and backspacing you may need and they come complete and ready to use. There is no need to spend extra money on having beadlocks or inner reinforcing rings installed.

We got the first set of Allied's Renegade style wheel. The Renegade style wheel is very similar to their Sand Star style with extra material machined out to add a different look and lighten the wheel. We are very confident that the Allied wheels with not come apart like our last set of wheels. This puts our minds at ease and lets us concentrate on high speed dune runs rather than part failures (which may cause the car to roll over).
