These
are two of Leigh's three monster Zuks. The latest creation is a secret
until Suzuki Rhino Rally in 1999 -- it's an LJ80 soft-top
with a Vitara 1600cc engine, 1300cc, five-speed gear box and SJ410
transfer box and axles, SPOA with a mild spring lift and two-inch body
lift running on 33x12.50/15 General MTs.
Leigh says he is, "Taking it to the Yanks in showing them who builds the biggest Suzukis." Anyway back to the pickups. They are all his own work with everything that isn't Suzuki being made by himself. They are over 99% Suzuki. Mechanically they're both the same. SJ413 1294cc engine with a Janspeed Vitara exhaust manifold and SJ413 five-speed gear box, SJ410 transfer box and axles. The hand brake is on the transfer box as being much higher eliminates the problem of mud getting in the rear drums. SPOA with a mild spring lift thanks to re-arched Suzuki mono-leaves from the Spanish-built SJ410 Santana. Leigh prefers the 1294cc engine to the Sammy 1324cc engine as it revs better/harder. It's all he needs. For increased rear wheel travel the rear shocks are angled in at the top. Neither truck has a winch because they never get stuck. Both have snorkels. Should they need them--and you're following in a standard 4X4--call the Coast Guard. The smaller Little Foot is his real off-roader when he can prise it away from his wife. If he were to sell it she'll divorce him. It started life as a standard 410 hard-top from which he chopped the cab and put on an old Suzuki pickup bed -- criminal! It runs on 33x12.50/15 General MTs. This little 4X4 regularly goes over to France for tough off-roading. Little Foot won best in show at the 1997 Suzuki Rhino Rally. The bigger Lite Foot is all genuine LWB pickup which he salvaged from a scrap yard for ?350 minus engine, gearbox and fuel tank -- which was no problem as he intended putting in a VW 1,600cc turbo diesel. Leigh found it sluggish, so put a 1300 Suzuki engine back in. It has a two-inch body lift, and slightly longer shackles on the rear to level it up. To keep the soft ride he's kept the springs standard. It runs on 35x12.50/15 General MTs mounted on custom hand-made wheels to get the right offset. The front wheel arches are extended Sammy items and the rears are extended standard arches. Again this vehicle gets used and abused off-road. The cab in the back is for his 2 gun dogs. This truck features loads of trick bits hidden all over the place. like the little lights on the roof and the sun visor and -- most obvious -- the twin headlamp conversion using Volvo 740 headlamp units and the backs off of Subaru light units as they're flatter. This is probably the biggest SJ in the UK at the moment. Lite Foot won Best in Show, Working Class on day two of the 1998 Suzuki Rhino Rally. Leigh makes and sells his own gear and any one wanting help and advice should call him on +44 (0) 1304 830994. This is a UK number so please bear that in mind when calling.
