Just when you thought that every form of motorsport was represented in the Dirt Nation, Bully Dog Technologies, the diesel performance guys bring a new form of racing to the Nation, dirt drag racing with diesel powered trucks.

Drag racing has been around for years, there are races held on all kinds of surfaces, everything from pavement to water with vehicles from lawn mowers to 5000hp top fuel cars. But drag racing on dirt is something that as far as we know, has never been attempted before. While traditional drag racing with diesel trucks is becoming popular, trucks belong in the dirt! So here it is, the Bully Dog Dirt Drags Presented by CRE Rocker Flares.

The 1/8 mile drag strip was constructed on the front straightaway of a one mile horse racing track at the Bannock County Fairgrounds located in Pocatello, Idaho just down the road from the Bully Dog Technologies headquarters. The racing surface had been prepared for days, the end result was a very smooth racing surface with just a slight amount of loose dirt on the top. Getting a good launch off the line would prove to be very tricky as the right traction and slip would be very important.

Trucks were broken down into four classes, the modifications performed to each truck determined which one of the classes a truck was placed into. The Modified Class which featured mildly tuned trucks and the Race Class featuring trucks with endless amounts of modifications were the classes that were highly contested. The Modified Class became a battle between 3 trucks, each entered the Semi-Finals without a single lose, the event was run featuring a double elimination format, the 3 racers made it to the Semi’s had come through 5 brackets without a lose thanks to having a good understanding of what it took to be fast on the dirt track. The start became very tricky as the night went on as the track conditions would change after each and every race. Once off the starting line each driver had to make adjustments in the amount of throttle and wheel input. With to much power put to the ground the rear end of the truck would get loose and step out thus slowing down the run which usually meant taking a lose. Throughout the event the crowd favorite in the Modified Class became an almost stock looking Chevy Duramax drive by Doug Klassen of Diesel Depot, a local Bully Dog dealer. Unfortunately Doug would be eliminated in the Semi-Finals as the competition cut better lights at the start, Doug had to settle for Third Place. The Finals came down to an insane battle between two local drivers, Randy Moffit driving a Chevy Duramax and Rick Becker racing a Ford F350. In each of the three races the margin of victory was less then a tenth of a second. When the dust had settled, Rick and his 6 liter Ford came out on top.

The battle in the Race Class was just as intense. With the rules in this class allowing for unlimited modifications the races down the 1/8 mile were very fast and very exciting. Each driver fought for traction down the entire track as they tried to harness their 600 plus horsepower beasts. The finals came down to a fight between Kam Hulse driving a Chevy sponsored by a chain of automotive aftermarket stores in Idaho, Custom Auto and a 2005 Dodge loaded with Bully Dog go fast goodies piloted by a local hot shoe, Jarid Vollmer. Each driver handled themselves professionally while trying to play mind games on one another through three very close races. In the end Mr. Vollmer came out on top in his wildly prepared yet daily driven Dodge.

The final races of the evening and the most popular with the crowd in the grand stands pitted the Klassen brothers, Michael and Philip, owners of Bully Dog Technologies against one another in two of the companies show and race trucks. Philip driving an 880 horsepower Dodge Ram walked all over his older brother, Michael racing his modified 2006 Chevy Duramax. With the tremendous turn out Bully Dog has vowed to bring dirt drag racing back in 2007 and is toying with the idea of possibly running a few of the events, boys and girls get your trucks ready!
