Memorial Weekend Mayhem Comes
to a Close-
Jeep Liberty, BF Goodrich and
Dynatrac
John Gilleland started his Memorial Day weekend by completely
smoking the competition at Three Peaks today. The 37-inch BFG
Krawlers on Dynatrac axles kept the Liberty clinging to the rocks
like a modern-day Spiderman. John made the unusually difficult
terrain look like a walk in the park. With a two-day total of 23
points (10 points today), no one even came close to challenging
him. Most teams spent day two much the same as they did day one -
rolled over and broken. Not so for John who came into day two with
a mere 13 points to lead the UNLIMITED class.
Day 2 Mayhem
The most difficult obstacles were the three-in-a-row combination of
numbers five, six and seven. These three obstacles became a
winch-fest early on and the number of teams that successfully
completed all three obstacles without pointing out could be counted
on one hand. Dallas Luttrell and spotter Matt Wooly of Salt Lake
City felt the wrath of obstacle six and, as Dallas put it, "broke
everything" on his 1998 Jeep. It wasn't actually "everything", but
his rearend looked like a mass of twisted metal. Rock crawling
veterans assessing the damage said that rearend had no business
being out here on this type of terrain.
Starting the day with 154 points from day
one was Chad Abbott and Scott Dana of Flagstaff, AZ in their 1986
Full Size Chevy half ton. On day one they rolled through the final
gates on obstacle eight to finish with 25 points. Their Chevy is
running a 383 Stroker, 700R4 tranny with a 208 t-case and front and
rear Dana 60's. It comes complete with hydraulic steering and a
100" wheel base. About the only thing missing are bead locks. Chad
and Scott are competing in all UROC and CalROCS events this year
and have yet to qualify for October's SUPERCRAWL. Having more than
their share of problems were Dan Brown and Dave Burling while
trying to scale obstacle 5. While they made it through the first
part of the obstacle, the last half is where it got ugly. After
several attempts to conquer the final wall, Dan suffered a busted
lower right control arm and was forced to call on his winch to
rescue him. He wasn't done however, as he still had time to
complete the obstacle. Once on the hook he tried dragging his rig
up the wall only to lose a hub clip on the right front, leaving
just his left front tire to climb the wall. When it was all said
and done, Dan had fried his winch connection and cooked his left
front tire leaving a thick layer of his MT/R on the rocks. With the
help of the folks at the BFG trailer they did a quick fix on the
Jeep in enough time to continue on with their final obstacle of the
day - number six. And after all that, they suffered a hard rollover
to finish the weekend.
