KX450F

A host of improvements make the 2008 Kawasaki KX™450F motocrosser easier to ride and more reliable. The 2008 engine received smoother, more user-friendly and linear low-rpm throttle response and torque delivery. These changes result in reduced fatigue, allowing riders to go faster for more laps. The improvements were achieved with new wedge-shaped crank webs, combined with a new heavier flywheel, resulting in reduced engine vibration and better low-end performance.

Reliability of the engine was enhanced via a new connecting rod material with a harder surface, a revised gear ratio and rotor on the oil pump for increased oil circulation and the piston-cooling oil jet was redesigned to prevent oil from being trapped under the piston.

The bottom end changes are coupled with a new shift cam shape and a wider track on the shift drum to permit easier and more consistent gear selection in the KX450F’s five-speed transmission. An ultra-smooth coating on the intake ports improves intake efficiency and throttle response, while revised ignition data provides easier restarting and a new five-bolt oil pump cover round out the engine upgrades.

The KX450F further benefits from new engine mounts spaced 10mm farther from the engine. This allows a slight decrease in torsional frame rigidity making for quicker turning and increased rear wheel traction.
Complementing the chassis change, the Kayaba fork and shock settings were fine-tuned to improve the front / rear balance for quicker turning and slightly stiffer settings were made to improve the bottoming characteristics. The overall suspension action is even smoother now through the addition of the friction-reducing Kashima Coat treatment on the inside surfaces of the outer fork tubes and the shock reservoir.

The 2008 KX450F will be available in Kawasaki lime green, with new black alumite-coated rims for a factory appearance, and aggressive graphics.

KAWASAKI KLX450R

Off-road, electric-start convenience, motocross performance are the foundations of the Kawasaki KLX450R.  This model’s lightweight engine has been tweaked for more low and mid-range performance, delivering a wide spread of responsive, high-traction torque and superior throttle control for low-speed maneuvering.

Kawasaki engineers have combined revisions in cam lift and timing in order to boost low and mid-range torque. Adding to the special characteristics of this engine are a heavier flywheel with double the mass of the KX450F’s unit and a wide-ratio five-speed transmission with gears that have been specifically selected for off-road competition.

Adding an electric starter in addition to its kick-starting capability gives the KLX rider more options in the event of a stall.  A high-capacity starter motor and compact, high-output battery helps insure quick and reliable starts under virtually all conditions a racer might face.  A simple push of the starter button is all that’s required in the event of a stall and can often be accomplished while still moving.

Given the length of some off-road race courses, being there at the end is just as important as getting there quickly. Kawasaki has engineered-in extra durability for the KLX450R, to help make it the envy of all competitive off-road riders. While the lightweight titanium intake valves from the KX remain unchanged, steel valves are used in place of the KX’s titanium exhaust valves and the radiator is fitted with a reservoir tank to provide efficient cooling during long enduros. The KLX450R also features a sealed chain.

Utilizing the top-of-the-line suspension,  the Kayaba AOS inverted fork provides superb damping and steering precision with tuning specifically optimized for light, easy handling characteristics. Oil and air are kept in separate chambers for stable damping performance during long events and low-friction seals contribute to smooth fork action.

A lightweight digital instrumentation cluster includes speedometer, twin tripmeter, odometer, and clock. The plastic fuel tank, which meets all environmental regulations, has a 2.1 gallon capacity and the petcock is fitted with a reserve. Illumination equipment is also kept on the light side, with the 35 watt compact headlight using a plastic lens, with an ultra-compact and energy efficient LED tail lamp highlight.

Among the other race-ready features of this new motorcycle are: side covers shared with its motocross brother, though purposely lacking any holes so that water can’t seep in; a left-side cover made of two pieces with a special “door” that allows easy access to the air cleaner; engine guards for both sides of the engine; and a works-style aluminum skid plate.   In fact, a fully-equipped KLX450R only weighs about 22 pounds more than the KX450F.

KLR650

Featuring new suspension and brakes, the KLR650 is a functional commuter during the week and a dirt road blaster on weekends. The new 41mm front forks now have less static sag for a taut, smooth ride on pavement. Front suspension travel is reduced from 9.1 in. to 7.9 in. A redesigned UNI-TRAK® linkage reduces sag and compliments the new front suspension by reducing rear wheel travel from 8.1 in. to 7.3 in.

The 2008 KLR650 features enhanced stopping power, thanks to a new 280mm petal-style front brake rotor that’s similar to ones used on Kawasaki’s Ninja® sportbikes.  Rear braking performance is also improved, thanks to a new rear brake calliper. These new suspension and brake upgrades boost the KLR650’s on-road performance, without diminishing its versatile off-road capabilities.
Several new refinements help make the KLR650 an even more worthy touring companion.  There’s a larger rear luggage rack that’s 3.5 in. longer and 5.1 in. wider than the old rack, and a new, narrower tail section which makes it easier to mount saddlebags.  Wind protection is also improved with all-new bodywork featuring a taller windscreen and large shrouds.  A large 6.1-gallon fuel tank and miserly fuel economy mean the new KLR650 retains its legendary range between fill-ups.
