Project CRF 450 - Performance Engineering: Super Cooler and Billet Oil Plugs

Feb. 01, 2003 By Damon Adams

PE has devised a nifty and really trick looking device that you install in your radiator hose. It is essentially a billet tube with fins on it to dissipate the heat and absorb the cool air that hits it, transferring the coolness to the coolant that passes through it. While it isn't going to make a big impact on the cooling abilities it does look really trick. The PE unit is estimated to drop the coolant temperature by about 4 or 5 degrees. Not a big change, but on a thumper that boils over easily I'll take any help I can get. The installation was self explanatory and was quite simple. I just drained the coolant from the bike and disconnected the radiator hoses. I then cut 1" of hose off of the hose in the middle and inserted the super cooler in the hoses. Looking at the pictures will give you a better idea.
 Billet Oil Plugs

PE offers oil plugs as well. They are really lightweight and more durable than the stock ones. These plugs come with the o-ring installed as well and have a semi-polished look to them. They will require a 19mm or a ¾ wrench to remove. They are low profile so they won't stick up in the way of any bolts. When I received mine I notice little metal shavings under the o-rings. Make sure before you put them on you inspect the plug for small aluminum shavings, we wouldn't want those getting in your oil. I simply took the o-ring off and sprayed the plug with contact cleaner then pressurized air, then re-installed the o-ring. Not a big deal, these are just the small things I always check out before putting new products on my bike.

Holeshot Endo
  • Super Cooler gets some points for the trick factor
  • Billet Oil Plugs are light weight and strong, and they come with the o-rings
  • Both items are low priced
  • The Super Cooler doesn't have a tremendous effect on cooling
  • Billet Oil Plugs require a wrench to remove, which makes it a little more of a pain
