The Pro Open class will see Daryl Hurley and Luke Burkhart retain their seats, while Danny Ham makes a welcome return to Suzuki along with newly-signed American Tim Weigand piloting the all-Suzuki RM-Z250.
Hurley is eager to reclaim the Australian Motocross title for himself and Suzuki. The 2005 Australian Motocross Champion led the 2006 series all the way into round eight of 10 before a knee injury abruptly ended his title defence, leaving the Suzuki hero hungrier than ever for the 2007 Australian Motocross crown.
“I can’t wait to get back on the RM-Z450 and start riding again,” said Hurley.
“I’m already training hard and by the time the season starts I should be stronger and fitter than ever. I’m totally focused on going racing and chasing next year’s titles.”
Following a strong showing in the 2006 Supercross Masters series, Burkhart will again be looking to assert his dominance as he partners Hurley in the Open Class for both Supercross and Motocross seasons.
Newly-recruited American rider, Weigand joins the Shift Motul Suzuki outfit to race the all-new Suzuki-built 2007-model RM-Z250 in the Motocross and Supercross Pro Lites championships. The 27-year-old Californian, who contested a limited number of Australian events in 2005 and 2006, already has experience with the Australian off-road race scene and is looking forward to climbing aboard the all-new RM-Z250.
“I’ve had the chance to test the new RM-Z250 at home in the States and it is an awesome machine,” said Weigand.
“In stock standard form the 250 is already so strong... it’s an excellent base platform for Jay to develop a great race bike and I can’t wait to race it.
“This has been a tough year for me with injuries and the results haven’t been there; now I’ve got a point to prove with Suzuki in 2007.”
Popular Australian motocross star Ham returns to the Suzuki fold as a factory rider to compete in selected supercross and motocross rounds.
“I’ve been out riding the new RM-Z450 and it feels great to be back aboard a Suzuki,” said Ham.
“Suzuki is providing a lot of support so I will have a really competitive bike and I expect to take some race and round wins across the season.”
Team Shift Motul Suzuki Team Manager Jay Foreman is delighted with his expanded line-up and is confident that his squad will be a dominant force in Australia’s premier off-road racing classes.
“The whole team is really excited about the 2007 line-up; it’s a strong combination of riders and Suzuki will be well positioned to take out championships in the Open and Lites classes in both the Supercross and Motocross series,” he said.
“It’s fantastic to re-enter the Lites class with the Suzuki-built RM-Z250. With this new bike and Tim’s experience we’ll be definite contenders for the title.
“Daryl is always so consistent year after year and we expect him to be back at the front of the field where he belongs and I know Luke will also perform well across both championships.
“We’ve had such a long relationship with Danny, it’s great to have him back on a Suzuki and, being based near the team in Newcastle, he will be heavily involved in our testing and development throughout the season.”
