Robby Gordon Wins Overall Four Wheel Vehicle Andy McMillin Wins Class 1

Jun. 04, 2005 By Rock On Motorsports

Robby Gordon 1st Overall Four Wheel Vehicle. This is Robby's first Baja win in quite some time.

Robby Gordon, 83: “We earned this one.  The race was tough; it was a pretty slow average and a lot of rocks.  It’s nice to win one – we’ve come so close so many times.  It was a good run for us, I just drove at an easy pace.  I am sick so my ears kept popping.  We were tight with Jason (Baldwin, 1) but then he had a problem – I think he got a flat.  They ran a great race, very smart and conservative.  I paced what I thought would get me to the finish line.  We race tomorrow in Dover, Delaware, so I have a long day ahead of me.  The only bad news today was the private plane we were going to use is broken.  I’ve got some good friends here, so I have to see what I can do.”

Mike Childress and Mouse McCoy take top Overall Motorcycle win by 9 1/2 minutes over Steve Hengeveld and Johnny Campbell.

Mike Childress, 14x: “It was amazing – I loved it.  It’s my first time ever to win a SCORE race.  I’ve been doing this since I was 14 and it was a dream to win a race and now I did it.  We were in fourth early on.  Mike’s Sky Loop was the hardest part.  I passed Johnny (Campbell, 1x) at Santa Tomas and never looked back.  Mouse McCoy ran the 1000 all by himself and I thought what better guy to get than him to ride with.”
Mouse McCoy, 14x: “Mike was the last bike off the line and he passed everyone before he gave me the bike. Mike rode to 10 mile marker 171, then I took it to 273 and Mike finished it.  Our strategy was there was a really tough stretch so if I was fresh through it, it would help.  It was really a tough course – it was a true Baja course.  We had a flawless ride.  Johnny (Campbell, 1x) congratulated us on the race.  Johnny is such a class act, he is a real competitor.  We talked about strategy.  They usually get out in the lead and control the race.  This time we got the lead and we had a helicopter leading the way for us, it was beautiful.  The helicopter kept us informed so we controlled the race.”

Josh Frederick, Cyle Chislock, and Levi Marana take 1st overall ATV.

Josh Frederick, 10a: “We had no problems. The course was marked good. I started the race and finished. Levi (Marana) and Kyle (Chislock) rode in between.”

BILSTEIN 11 :00 PM UPDATE
Ensenada, Baja California - Robby Gordon, driving the Red Bull # 83 SCORE Unlimited Production Trophy Truck roared into Uruapan at race mile 74.4 in first place and led the pace throughout the race. We had heard yesterday that Robby might not be able to make it to Ensenada in time for today's race, but he came through to take the win. After a long 419-miles, Robby Gordon stayed out in front all the way to the finish. Robby toughed out the Baja terrain throughout the entire day and crossed the finish in front of everyone. Jason Baldwin was his only threat today and told us," We came out of Mikes down the hill and there were nails everywhere...we ended up having 3 flats. We wanted to race Robby to the finish since we were so close all day but we'll have to to wait for the next race." Baja champion, Andy McMillin, arrived to the baseball stadium finish line and passed through the checkered flag to see his waiting dad/co-driver, Scott McMillin, and crew. The father/son duo won back-to-back Baja races since capturing the San Felipe 250 in February and displaying yet another excellent team effort here at the Baja 500. Teams are still racing their way to the finish line..we will keep you posted.

Co-driving for Tom Watson and Matt Scaroni ,Travis , better known as Jr. Syko in the off-road world, was full of mud when he got out of the car. "We were 8 minutes down at KM 77 but we made it up before the finish...so that's all that matters."

How was Simpsons? Dude, it was a mess. We were waiting just on the other side of Simpsons for over 40 minutes while we tried to get Rick Johnson out of the mess. He was blocking the course so we and many other racers made way and finally got out of there. But we made it!! "
