Bryce Menzies, Ricky Johnson Win at Lucas Oil Off-Road Round 2
After great weather and great racing marked the first round of the 2014 Lucas Oil off-Road Racing Series, race teams and fans returned for round two of the series at Wild Horse Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona. With a number of racers putting their mark on the season in round one, a number of racers who didn’t get the finish they wanted at round one stepped up for Sunday’s round two yesterday.
After a tough start to the season at Saturday’s round one, Bryce Menzies came out for Sunday’s race ready to do battle. He jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The battle for second place raged on behind him, with Carl Renezeder, yesterday’s winner Rob MacCachren and Brian Deegan all challenging for the runner-up spot during the race. In the end, a great start on the midway-point restart by Renezeder gave him the momentum to put his new truck in second place. Deegan was able to hold off challengers to finish in third place to earn the final podium spot.
In Pro Buggy, Bradley Morris backed up his third-place finish yesterday with a win at round two after Eric Fitch had a mechanical failure while leading the race. Finishing again in second place was Chad George, who leaves Arizona with two second-place finishes in a solid opening weekend for the young racer. Finishing in third place was Dave Mason Jr., holding off fourth-place finisher Kevin McCullough and fifth-place Steven Greinke.
In Pro Lite, Justin “Bean” Smith and Sheldon Creed battled for the lead early in the race. Although Smith pressured Creed a number of times during the race, solid driving kept Creed in the lead and earned him the win. Smith was was able to hold off the trucks behind him to leave Arizona with a second-place finish at round two. Rounding out the podium in third place was RJ Anderson, who held off Bradley Morris and Casey Currie in fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the Pro 4 race on Sunday, Eric Barron jumped out to the early lead and staying in front of Rob MacCachren, Greg Adler, Ricky Johnson and Todd LeDuc. Racers battled all the way to the halfway point, with Barron holding onto the lead while the racers behind him shuffled in place for a spot near the front. After the midway restart, MacCachren made a hard push for the lead but Barron was able to hold him off. Later in the race, MacCachren challenged Barron yet again and this time moved into the lead, as Barron turned off into the hot pits just after losing the lead. MacCachren stayed out front for much of the race but a mechanical issue forced him off the track to the infield section where he relinquished the lead to Johnson. As the race wore on, Johnson was able to hold on to earn the Pro 4 win at round two, with Adler finishing in second place and Jerry Daugherty in third.
