You remember the Ram 1500 Rebel TRX Concept pickup, right? Unveiled last year in Texas, it was a Ram Rebel on steroids featuring a 6.2L supercharged Hemi, off-road gear galore, and enough scoops to inhale a flock of sheep.
Internet patent sleuth and human automotive encyclopedia Bozi Tatarevic has uncovered a couple of drawings which could indicate that Ram is leaning towards actually producing the thing. The sketches show a pumped-up pickup with styling cues remarkably aping those of the TRX, including the current Rebel’s handlebar moustache grille and widebody exterior sheetmetal. The phalanx of vents and scoops seem to remain intact as well.
A top-down view even shows outlines for the twin in-bed spare tires that were featured on the show truck in Dallas. Having seen (and heard) the TRX in person, this author can confidently say it would make an excellent foil for the Ford Raptor, for which Ram currently does not have an answer.
The sole flaw in this theory is that Ram is set to introduce an all-new Ram 1500 next month in Detroit and, if spy shots are any indication, it won’t look anything like the current model. The TRX (and the drawings shown here) are based completely on the current model.
However, readers with sharp memories will recall FCA is planning to continue making the Ram in its current iteration even after introducing the restyled 2019 model. With this in mind, and taking the presumption Ram is not going to bin its tooling for the old Ram right away, it is conceivable the TRX – or a version of it – could appear sometime in the next twelve months.
After all, the current Ram 1500 has been on sale since the 2009 model and has long since paid for itself, so with the company continuing its production in parallel with the new model, they would have the leeway to produce special editions such as the TRX without threatening the line’s bread-n-butter models.
Look for the newly-styled 2019 Ram 1500 to appear at the North American International Auto Show in January.
