Ford-F-150-Raptor-2017-8-9
Ford hails its 2017 all-new Ford F-150 Raptor as “the toughest, smartest, most capable Raptor ever.” Today, Ford is highlighting a key new feature on its new pickup, which helps explain why it hails it as its best off-road truck to date: purpose-built Fox shocks constructed exclusively for the new Raptor.

Ford will be fitting new 3.0-inch Fox shocks on its 2017 Raptor. The new shocks reportedly add a base valve piston to enable lower gas pressure to create an improved driving experience on the highway. Both the new front and rear Fox shocks also feature an internal bypass that features nine distinct zones to progressively adapt the shock to changing condition, whether on the highway or off. The Fox 3.0 shock’s final compression stages act as an internal bumpstop for the Raptor, sending fluid through the top of the piston while the shock is fully compressed to help prevent the truck from bottoming out.

The biggest change in the suspension department on the 2017 F-150 Raptor is the Fox shocks are actually larger in diameter compared to the previous generation, moving from 2.5 inches to 3 inches overall, which provides 44 percent more volume for increased heat dissipation and fade resistance when the truck is banging through the whoops of the desert or tree-rutted trails in the forest. According to Ford, the new Raptor will offer nearly two inches more suspension travel over the previous truck’s 11.2-inch front and 12.0-inch rear, providing the the 2017 F-150 Raptor with 13.0 inches of front travel and 13.9 inches of travel in the rear, which equates to a 15 percent increase in overall suspension travel.

According to Ford, the end result with the Fox shocks equates to this: “With a larger-diameter outer body and internal piston, the new FOX shocks allow Raptor to handle harder impacts while reducing harshness to the driver.”
