At the Detroit Auto Show today, Ram Truck announced some big news with its new 1500 Rebel, but what may have gotten lost in the shuffle is that it squeezed a little more fuel efficiency on its EcoDiesel Ram to further extend its fuel-efficiency lead in the half-ton truck market.
The 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE, or High Fuel Efficiency, will deliver the best fuel economy among all full-size truck competitors with an EPA-certified 29 mpg highway fuel economy, which Ram notes is 12 percent higher than the next-closest competitor. Ram tagged the 2015 model with its “HFE” designation is to highlight the truck’s excellent fuel efficiency.
“It’s the High Fuel Efficiency model, which features a tonneau cover and running boards,” said Ram Trucks Chief Engineer Mike Cairns. “Those provide significant improvement in aerodynamics and allowed us to re-certify this model with EPA and get a 29-mile-per-gallon highway label.”
Aside from getting 29 mpg on the highway, the EcoDiesel HFE’s city and combined mpgs are 21 and 24, respectively, which Ram notes is also highest among all pickups.
“The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel delivers dominant fuel efficiency across five configurations and nine trims,” said Mike Cairns, Director – Ram Truck Engineering. “The Quad Cab is a widely purchased configuration which delivers the best aero benefit of any half-ton truck.”
Ram says the EcoDiesel HFE will go on sale late first quarter of 2015.
