Believe it or not, tomorrow you can buy a full-blown, totally-legit Army-issued Humvee. According to a story on Yahoo, the Army Times notes that the Department of Defense will start auctioning off Humvees to the public, starting tomorrow with a small batch of vehicles but that number could be as high as 4,000 eventually. The first batch of auctions takes place tomorrow, December 17th, with each vehicle starting at a price of $10,000 (and increasing in increments of $500).
The vehicles will not be legal for on-road use, but off-roaders who dreamed of always owning one can bid on the Humvees and use them at the ultimate trail rig, as the item is “offered for Off-Road Use Only.” In the past, these vehicles would simply be scrapped, but due to changes in policies the vehicles will have future life beyond their previous military uses.
There will be 25 different vehicles put up for auction tomorrow, all of which are currently located in Utah. Vehicles range in mileage from 1,361 up to 38,334, with the Humvees produced from 1987 to 1994, ranging from troop- to cargo-style transporters. None of the vehicles will feature any of the armor or military firepower once equipped on the rigs, and there are a few noteworthy catches with bidding. Buyers will be responsible for arranging transportation of the vehicles within three days of the sale, and there will be no actual title that goes with the vehicle (though a bill of sale can be provided). Buyers will also have to explain exactly how the vehicle will be used.
