Ignition Issues
I have a 1987 Warrior 350, I have no spark to the plug. I have replaced everything (sparkplug coil, cdi box, wiring harness, handle bar switches) except for the stator. My question is before I buy a new stator, do you think it mite be the pickup coil?
-Zachary Mcneilly
Well, it seems you’ve thrown enough money at the issue, and the cost of another ignition-related part shouldn’t be that much for the ancient quad. I probably would have started in the wiring harness on the Warrior looking for any possible chaffing that could cause grounding of the ignition system. Then I would have made sure that if I had a kill switch or anything like this mounted on the ATV that it was not grounding the system or “killing” the spark. Always start simple and think slowly, because before you know it the bike is totally rebuilt and the problem is still not found.
Yamaha Warrior Question 2
I have a 2000 Yamaha Warrior 350 that the motor froze up on. I bought a 2001 Yamaha Big Bear 400 2x4 and was planning on switching the motors. Will it work?
-Cameron
Although these seem to be similar engines, they are very far apart and mounting the engine from the Big Bear in the Warrior frame could cause plenty of headaches. I am not saying it cannot be done, but I can tell you that it will come at some kind of cost.
Honda Wheels
I have a 1997 Honda TRX Foreman 400 and want to get new wheels and tires for it. The ones I have on it now are 24-8-11 s and 24-10-11s 5+2 and 2+5 4/110. I would like to get bigger tires and rims but I keep getting differing opinions on what I can use? What I would like to put on this ATV is 26-9-12 and 26-11-12s.
-Pat
Going up in size on your Foreman 400’s tires is not out of the question, but getting fat meats under the fender can be a problem with the stock suspension. I would look for a one- or two-inch lift from companies such as Extreme or Gorilla to get the clearance needed for the bigger tires. These kits are cheap and easy to install.
Nerf Bars
I am looking for information on a banshee to put nerf bars on. The info that I received is not on the paper. It also told me to look it up your website. Could you please send me the proper info to to be able to install the nerf bars properly. I have a 2003 Yamaha Banshee. Thanks.
-Alberta White
Installing Nerfs on any quad is very simple. There are a number of stories about this on Off-Road.com. Search the site on the right-hand side of the main page.
Youth ATV Suspension
Where can you purchase aftermarket shocks … reasonably?
-Dave
Unfortunately, Dave the aftermarket shock world is not cheap. The shocks you need for your ATV can be found through almost any Web-based ATV parts site. Try Motosport.com first, and if that doesn’t work look into Hetrick racing. Hetrick deals with youth quads on a daily basis and should be able to get you what you need whether new or used.
Idle Issues
I have a 1980’s Honda 300 Fourtrax. It will idle normal but when you give some gas it’s like it wants to cut out. What’s the problem?
-Michael Cameron
The quad most likely has a serious carb issue that needs to be resolved. If the ATV sits for a month or two, the fuel begins to become stale and varnish will form on parts of the carb’s insides. Both of these are easily fixed but can be time consuming and require patience. A carb rebuild article was posted a month or so back on this site and you can use that to clean out and rebuild the carb on your Fourtrax. Then get fresh fuel for the ride.
Carb Trouble?
My 2000 polaris scrambler50 runs for about 10 minutes, dies, starts back up but give it gas it dies?
-rhp
This could very easily be a carb issue. Completely disassembling the entire carburetor and cleaning it out thoroughly will most likely cure the problem you are having. Start here and let us know how it works. See the carb rebuild story as well.
Oil Starved
My son has a 2006 Dinli 90cc two-stroke with self-mixing oil system. It is not using much oil out of the tank, and the oil light has come on. What should I do?
-Brandon
If my memory serves me right, some of the oil-injection quads have an electronic device on the side of the carb that actually feeds the oil into the fuel system. Check the electronics in this area. Worst-case scenario you can do away with the entire problem by mixing the fuel in the tank instead of relying on the quad to do it through the complicated electrical system.
Where There’s Smoke …
I have a 1999 Polaris 400 Sportman. The other day I went to start the machine and it started blowing white smoke and more so if I revved the gas. The smoke smells like burnt oil. Checked the oil it’s full. Any ideas what this could be?
Thanks,
Ken McCormack
Wow Ken, sounds like you have a worn set of rings and possibly a cylinder as well. Smoke is also seen when the valves get a bit too much debris or carbon build up on them from years of use without proper maintenance. Sounds like it’s time to overhaul the beast and get the power back you’ve been missing.
Sitting Quad
I have an edge 250 quad. It has been sitting for about 4 years and it will not start. What should I look for that could possibly be wrong?
-Kayley
Look for a new quad! Now seriously, it may take a good bit of maintenance to get the edge back. A carb rebuild is in order along with a battery if this unit uses one. I personally have not ever seen an “Edge,” but I guess I have now heard of one.
2002 Suzuki Quadmaster
What's a used one, in good condition, worth?
-Lance
I would think a top shape Suzuki Quadmaster 4x4 could fetch $1500-$2000 or more depending on the ATV. Just remember this: it’s worth what someone is willing to pay for it!
Suzuki LT80 Light Kit
Where can I buy an LT80 lighting kit for my daughters 2000' Suzuki quad?
Thanks for your help,
Wade
Light kits are not usually recommended for youth quads, simply because children are not attentive enough to ride in the dark. But, if lighting is what you need then look to Baja Designs and they should be able to get you started.
Carb Hoses
I need to know where to put what hoses on the carb of a 500 scrambler, 1998.
-Tim
This very question is the reason I highly recommend getting a factory service manual. The factory makes sure to list details, such as carb vent lines and routing for peeps who need it. Get that service manual and keep it handy! That’s my solution and I’m sticking to it!
Seat Needed
Hello, my name is Damian and I’m looking for a seat for my DS 650 Baja Bombardier 2003 model quad bike, so if you could send me an email on how much and how to purchase one that would be great.
Thanks,
Damian
The best place to get used parts for the quad is eBay. The ds650 was a very popular quad and I owned one myself. Try eBay and Google the seat as well for any other sites that might have used parts for sale.
Suzuki King Quad
I just purchased a 1996 Suzuki King Quad 4x4 and was wondering if you were able to advise where I can get an electronic copy of the owner’s manual.
Regards,
J.R. Hughes
The ATV service manuals are all over the net and just require a good search. The paper copy of these service manuals can also be purchased on sites such as eBay and craigslist. Some sites will sell PDF versions of these manuals but you’ll have to look harder for those.
Grizzly Don’t Start
I have a 2003 Yamaha Grizzly 660. It don't start. I had the starter tested and it is good. All the fuses are good. When holding the brake lever the dash shows 3 mph. When I plug in the 3-wire connector to the starter relay, the voltage drops dramatically. What are your thoughts?
Troy
Battery? Is this a trick question? Start with the battery and from there it’s all down hill. Then look for shortages in the wiring harness.
Suspension Tuning
I have a 2006 honda TRX400EX quad. Is 30 ride height sag for rear and 20? For front suitable?
Thank You,
Allan
Allen, my friend, I have no clue how to answer you on this. The problem is, I have no clue what you weigh nor do I have your quad in front of me to see how the suspension is set up. There’s too much missing info to even make a good guess. Sorry but info in equals info out!
Trail Boss
Does anyone know how the vent tubes running from the gas tank and frame vents on a 1999 250 Trail Boss run?
Rollie
Straight, crooked, straight with a side of twist-flop. Sound right? I can’t tell you how much a service manual would help in this situation.
Why is it that people will buy an ATV and plan to fix it themselves but refuse to buy a step-by-step guide on how to do so. Service manuals can greatly reduce the shop time and increase the ride time, but we choose to go the hard way with hear say advice instead of facts. Remember this people: there is a high cost to low living! Some will get that in a few days.
Thanks again for the great questions,
RS
