As seasons change, so do the needs of the off-roader. When the summer sun bakes the southwest United States up over 100 degrees for weeks on end, we have to pack up the quads and head for higher ground and hopefully cooler temps. It's time to put the paddle tires away for a few months, and look for some good traction for the trail.
To re-shoe our ride, we turned to our friends at Maxxis. Our 300EX is primarily ridden in the desert most of the year, but for the mountain trail riding season we were looking for superior traction and puncture resistance for those anticipated sharp rocks and limbs. To make this a truly multi-use tire, we also needed to consider traction on the sand as well as excellent high speed handling. The RAZR looks to be the perfect fit.
The front tires feature a raised center ridge to provide precise steering. The tire comes in a 4-ply or 6-ply version. We chose the 6-ply version for optimum puncture resistance. The tires are very popular in the Grand National series and have a race compound for superior traction. Another bonus from the racing heritage is that the tires are very light! This means we will not lose any precious power due to heavy tires.
We will be checking in to claims that the Razr's tend to trade durability for performance, allowing for greater bite & handling. And while our application will typically not involve much mud, the wide placement of the tread is designed to be self-cleaning so you boggers can go at it! Next month we'll take a look at how this set of rubber behaved on the sand and on the trail.
