Grizzly 660 - 2003 Yamaha ATV Lineup

Oct. 01, 2005 By ORC STAFF
After blowing away the competition its first year on the scene, the Grizzly 660 returns in 2003 ready to rule as king of the ATV forest. With its large engine, superior power, advanced 4WD system with differential lock, digital display and fully independent front and rear its class in all categories as a top-of-the-line utility ATV.

The Grizzly's forceful power is born from its SOHC engine, which features the latest in ATV technology with Yamaha's patented, compact five-valve, 660cc liquid-cooled, 45-degree inclined engine. With a 100mm x 84mm bore and stroke, the mighty mill provides all the power necessary for exploring on trails, hunting in the backcountry or working on the farm. The Grizzly 660 will easily power through the South's deepest bogs and negotiate the North's highest peaks.

This bear's power plant breathes through a 42mm Mikuni carburetor, which provides not only quick throttle response down low, but consistent power throughout the rev range. Exhaust exits via a rust-resistant stainless steel muffler designed specifically to offer the best power characteristics, while keeping engine noise to a minimum.

The Grizzly 660 boasts a superior, three-step push-button On-Command 2WD, 4WD (limited slip) and 4WD (locking differential) system. This allows the rider to take on the toughest trails. Whether its easy handling on the farm in 2WD or crawling over fallen trees in 4WD, the Grizzly 660 offers it all with the simple push of a button near the right grip.

The Grizzly can take on just about anything with high-and-low range gearing options that allow riders to maximize performance with the shift of a lever - whether you're in low range and pulling a heavy load or riding through rough terrain, or in high range motoring down the trail. The Grizzly also offers the luxury of reverse gear for getting out of any sticky spot or situation.

Yamaha's exclusive Ultramatic™ automatic transmission provides unrivaled engine braking in an ATV. The Ultramatic is the world's first ATV transmission utilizing both a centrifugal clutch and a sprag (one-way) clutch behind the primary pulley. This provides both superior engine braking and durability over other systems that utilize the drive belt only as a clutch. This superior engine braking can easily be felt when riding down a slope with heavy loads, hauling a trailer or slowing for a corner. Couple that with hydraulic 220mm front brakes and a 150mm rear shaft-mounted disc brake, and this bear offers plenty of stopping power in any situation.

Showcasing the attention to detail customers expect from Yamaha ATVs, the Grizzly 660 has a wide range of standard items designed to enhance overall comfort and convenience. This ATV features the most advanced, fully independent double wishbone front and Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) on the market today, and that translates to hours of riding comfort. With 7.1 and 9.5 inches of travel in the front and rear, respectively, and 11.8 inches ground clearance, light, easy steering and tight turning radius, the Grizzly 660 allows riders to climb over obstacles with ease and comfort.

The Grizzly 660's convenience features include easy-access location of the choke lever near the left grip, a waterproof automotive-style DC outlet that can power a mobile phone or Global Positioning System (GPS) device, a no-tools easy-access air box and a spin-on oil filter taking the hassle out of engine service.

The Grizzly gets comfortable with outer- and inner-fenders to keep riders dry, full floorboards that extend from the front to rear fender, a huge 5.3-gallon fuel tank that means hours of exploring, engine vibration that is reduced through rubber motor mounts and a counter balancer, an under seat storage box large enough to store trail necessities, and a center-mounted and detachable trailer hitch.

The Grizzly 660 also features large capacity front and rear racks (99 lbs. front, 187 lbs. rear) for all hunting and camping needs, and an integrated LCD fuel gauge, speedometer, odometer/dual trip meter, hour meter and clock and differential lock meter lets the rider know what's happening on an easy-to-read instrument panel.

Knowing that wild Grizzly bears can live up to 30 years, Yamaha incorporated several design features into the Grizzly 660 to increase the machine's overall lifespan. The radiator is positioned high within the frame and behind the front guard to prevent damage from sticks, water and other elements; the shaft drive system is maintenance-free; and the belt housing breather system has a vent designed to reduce dirt, water and other debris from entering, thereby extending belt life.

The electrical components, similar to those found on Yamaha's marine products with proven waterproof capabilities, are individually designed and integrated in a fuse box under the seat for protection against the elements. The Grizzly 660 also features an electric starter with back-up recoil. Add these features to Yamaha's legendary durability, and the Grizzly 660 quickly distinguishes itself from other ATVs. In 2003, it will be the ATV to beat.

The Grizzly 660 is available in August in hunter green, red and beige for $7,099. The Grizzly is also available in two limited edition colors for $7,399: Realtree Wetlands Hunter Edition (available in September) and Metallic Titanium Limited Edition (available in October).
